Lost Socks and an Inner Monologue

Today I was sitting in my closet floor putting away my clothes which means sorting through socks and matching them up with their pair. I put the single socks in a row so I could see which sock matched with the sock that I had just pulled out of the pile until I, in theory, had matched up all my socks into pairs. As more and more pairs were reunited the single socks became less and less until a few unlucky socks were left over. On occasion when I have no other option I will put together a mismatched pair of socks but most often the loner socks will be put to other more industrious uses. It usually has something to do with cleaning in the capacity of a dust rag or perhaps a buff rag if the cloth is soft enough.

Today as I sat there deciding the fate of one sock in particular I had a strange connection with my little cloth friend. Did this sock want to be a dust rag or did he want to go on till the end of his life as a pair? Was he fated to live a solitary life of collecting dander and other particles of goodness knows? I had worked myself into a panic by this point so to calm down I though to myself, "Self, its a sock. Of course it has no preference." Self cleverly replied, "But do you want to be a dust rag or locked down in a pair?".

"Self," I said "I am no sock nor do I plan on being alone or locked down. I mean, who wants to be stuck as a pair! Sure the first part is all nice and warm and fuzzy as you're sitting there on the shelf but what happens when you have to do your job?! You get covered in nasty feet sweat and what if the guy is a pig farmer? I mean ew! Then again cleaning up dust sounds just as bad. Ill just stay on the shelf."

Self at this point had the audacity to laugh. "You know damn well sitting on the shelf isn't an option." Said Self. "You also know that you are far stronger when you're part of a pair. Sure you could go around being a photographer for the rest of your life but for what? Without someone to drive you, inspire you, love you, your life will be pretty boring. Not to mention that dust rags don't really get washed and used over again. They have a long singular solitary stretch of life without much excitement. Sometimes they even get lost behind the TV! Pairs on the other hand get washed and reunited! Then the warm fuzzy feeling comes back until the next tough time. Not to mention all that washing and drying is the best washing/drying in the world when you're in a pair!! I mean its pretty freakin' hot!" I then realized that I had been getting excited thinking about socks in a washing machine....

At this point I looked at the sock and gave it a good long look. It was still young, some small signs of wear, the elastic was still good and there were no holes. I put the sock on the shelf. Me and my little friend would have another day to decide if we were going to be dust rags or smelly socks. We hoped for the latter, especially with one sock in particular! But she's over there paired up with some other sock.... I mean I would be a pig farmer's sock if she were my pair!! I would follow her anywhere! That's the advantage of being a photographer; you can find work anywhere! hahahaha....

um..

We're talking about socks still right?....

We will not be DUST RAGS DAMNIT!!
Trust that we will find our pair. Trust that our pair will find us.

The sock's on the shelf.
She's out getting dirty.
The wash is coming.
He'll be waiting.
Lets pray she finds him this time! He can't wait much longer.

Yours,
~Justin
